Swimming Climbs After Day 2 Of NWC Championship

BOISE, Idaho - The Whitman College swimming teams used a strong second day at the Northwest Conference Championships to tighten the race in both team standings and individual events Saturday at the Idaho Aquatic Complex.​

Through 24 events, the Whitman men sit in third place with 270.5 points, just behind University of Puget Sound (347.5) and leader Whitworth (594). The Whitman women are locked in a tie for fourth at 263 points with George Fox, with Whitworth (488) and Puget Sound (319) pacing the field.​

Whitman opened the evening with a big relay podium, as the quartet of Adrian Dulong, Elliot Yung, Ian McClelland and Brodie Salzbrener powered the Blues to third in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:33.96.​

In the 400-yard individual medley, Finn Stukerjurgen led Whitman's distance medley group with a fourth-place finish in 4:11.65, while Keenan RiggsTurpin added a sixth-place 4:14.37 in the championship final. Ian McClelland returned in the 100 butterfly and grabbed fourth in 50.47.​

Whitman's middle-distance crew shone in the 200 freestyle, where Salzbrener raced to second in 1:41.98 and Dulong followed in third at 1:43.63. Jay Boivin capped the event with a B-final win and 11th-place overall finish in 1:48.66.​


Breaststroke depth added more points, as Elliot Yung placed 13th in the 100 breast in 1:00.92 and Kyle Milburn tied for 14th at 1:01.25. In the 100 backstroke, Calvin Tappert scored 11th in 53.59, with fellow Tyson Scott close behind in 13th at 54.46.​

The men's session closed with another relay podium: Dulong, Riggs-Turpin, Tappert and Salzbrener combined for third in the 800 free relay in 6:59.43.​

Whitman's women picked up early relay points in the 200 medley, as Avery Riley, Elly Rectenwald, Teague Monahan and Cassidy Monroe claimed sixth in 1:49.83.​

Siena Hayes delivered in the 400 IM A-final with a sixth-place 4:53.76 to pace the Blues in the event. Riley then produced one of the performances of the night, surging from lane four to win the 100 butterfly in 56.38. Teague Monahan joined her in the A-final and took eighth in 59.39.​

In the 200 freestyle, Anneliese Hanson posted a sixth-place finish in 1:58.64 to lead Whitman's mid-distance group. Rectenwald added a strong breaststroke swim, taking fifth in the 100 breast in 1:07.84. Backstroker Ella Tyroler scored from the B-final in the 100 back, placing 11th with a 1:03.59.​


The women's 800 free relay closed the session with another podium, as Hanson, Hayes, Monahan and Riley combined for third in 8:01.98.​

With multiple individual podiums, a 100 fly title from Riley, and top-three finishes in both 800 free relays, Whitman's men and women positioned themselves for a strong closing push on the final day of the Northwest Conference Championship at the Idaho Aquatic Complex.
