Baseball Drops Redlands Series Opener

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Whitman College baseball team opened its Southern California swing with plenty of traffic on the bases but could not keep pace with a hot University of Redlands lineup in a 16–7 loss Friday afternoon at The Yard.

Whitman (2–3) finished with 11 hits and pushed across runs in five different innings, but Redlands (4–5) broke the game open with six runs in the fifth as part of a 20‑hit performance. The Blues trailed just 5–3 heading into the bottom of the fifth before the Bulldogs' big frame created breathing room the hosts never surrendered.

Nate Petz led Whitman with two hits, including a first‑inning double, and drove in a run while also adding a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Landon Runyan added two hits and an RBI, and designated hitter Sam Mieszkowski-Lapping provided the biggest swing of the day with a two‑run homer to left‑center in the seventh. Halen Otte and Jonah Chang each chipped in extra‑base hits, with Otte doubling in the seventh and Chang ripping a double down the third‑base line in the sixth.

Whitman's first breakthrough came in the third when Jordan Montemayor singled and scored on Wyatt Miyamoto's RBI single, followed by Runyan's RBI knock to cut the deficit to 4–2. In the fourth, Petz's sacrifice fly brought home Wilson to make it 5–3 and briefly swing momentum toward the visitors. The Blues added three more in the seventh on Otte's leadoff double, a Runyan single, Nate Teng's sacrifice fly and Mieszkowski's two‑run blast, then capped the scoring in the ninth on Logan Malzewski's pinch‑hit RBI triple down the right‑field line.

Redlands answered early and often, starting with a first‑inning RBI single from shortstop Tait Barsness and a three‑run second keyed by RBI knocks from Sam McCance and designated hitter Thomas Gerosa. Left fielder Isaac Umscheid homered in the third and later added an RBI triple in the fifth, while first baseman Jack Bullard finished 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBI. McCance went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and an RBI, sparking the Bulldogs at the top of the order and scoring twice in the decisive fifth.

That fifth inning proved pivotal as Redlands sent 10 batters to the plate, turning a 5–3 lead into an 11–3 cushion. A passed ball, a bases‑loaded walk and Bullard's two‑run double to center highlighted the surge before Umscheid's triple capped the six‑run frame. The Bulldogs added two more runs in both the sixth and seventh and another in the eighth to keep Whitman at arm's length.

Starter Russell Petersen took the loss for Whitman, working four innings and allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 12 hits with two strikeouts. Redlands right‑hander Jake Godoy earned the win, striking out seven over six innings while limiting Whitman to three runs (two earned).

The Blues and Bulldogs conclude their three-game set on Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. doubleheader.
