Baseball Caps Road Trip With Win At Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Whitman College baseball team saved its biggest swings for the finale of its Southern California trip, unloading a pair of grand slams in a 14–8 win at Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday morning.​

Down one run after the first, the Blues blew the game open with a third-inning slam from third baseman Jonah Chang, who turned a two-out, bases-loaded situation into a 4–1 Whitman lead with one swing. Chang finished 2-for-6 with four RBI and also added an RBI single in the fifth as part of a relentless day from the middle of the order.​

Landon Runyan matched Chang's fireworks two innings later, crushing a grand slam of his own in the fifth to cap a seven-run frame that pushed the advantage to 11–2. Runyan went 2-for-4 with five RBI, two walks and two runs scored, reaching base four times and spearheading an offense that pounded out 14 hits and drew 10 walks.​

Catcher Wyatt Miyamoto (3 RBI, 2 R) and second baseman Nate Petz (2 R, 1 RBI, 1 SB) set the table all afternoon, while shortstop Nick Teng doubled, scored twice and added a late insurance run as Whitman kept pressure on the Sagehens in the late innings. Christopher Nobrega and Luke Malzewski chipped in two hits apiece, with Malzewski drawing two walks and forcing in a run as part of the fifth-inning surge.​

On the mound, starter Jack Finn was steady over five innings, allowing just three hits and two runs while striking out six to earn the win and even his record at 1–1. Whitman's bullpen bent but held the line as Pomona-Pitzer tried to claw back with three runs in the eighth and another in the ninth before the Blues closed out the victory.​

Pomona-Pitzer leadoff hitter Kaito Gonzaga homered in the first and finished with three RBI, while the Sagehens used six pitchers in an effort to contain Whitman's lineup. The Blues wrapped their Southern California swing at 3–5, taking momentum home after putting up their highest run total of the young season in the trip finale.

Next up for the Blues is the opening of Northwest Conference play when they host George Fox for a three-game series starting Saturday, March 7.
