Women's Tennis Handles Whitworth In Road Test

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitman College women's tennis team delivered a statement road win in a clash of Northwest Conference heavyweights, storming back in singles to top Whitworth 4–3 on Saturday morning at the Scotford Tennis Center.

After dropping the doubles point with setbacks on courts two and three, the Blues (10–2, 9–0 NWC) flipped the script in singles, claiming four of six matches to stay unbeaten in conference play. At the top of the lineup, Nana Vang and Renata Rosell set the tone, each posting straight-set victories that quickly wrestled momentum away from the Pirates. Vang rolled past Paige Oliver 6–1, 6–1 on court one, while Rosell followed with a 6–4, 6–3 win over Faith Kert at No. 2.

Whitman's depth proved decisive in the middle and lower singles positions. Sascha Wells shook off a dropped opening set at No. 3 to grind out a 4–6, 6–1, 6–3 comeback against Turner-Esposito and, on court five, Gloria Lau delivered the match clincher, cruising to a 6–1, 6–4 win over Olivia Corbett.

Whitworth (6–3, 6–2 NWC) did its damage early by securing the doubles point. The Pirates earned wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, with Oliver and Turner-Esposito topping Bailey Bell and Wells 6–4 and the Corbett/Audrey Judson tandem besting Lau and Jules Thompson 6–3. The Blues avoided the sweep thanks to a 6–3 victory from Vang and Rosell at No. 1 doubles over Kert and Clara Todd, a result that foreshadowed Whitman's dominance at the top of the singles lineup.

In the final box score, Whitworth claimed singles wins at No. 4 and No. 6 as Judson outlasted Bell 2–6, 6–2, 6–4 and Josie Kellogg defeated Natalie Cruz 6–1, 6–3.

The Blues now take a break from conference play and will head to Virginia for four matches during their spring break trip this coming week. First up will be Washington & Lee on Tuesday, March 17 at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time.
