Baseball Swept By Puget Sound To Close Series

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College baseball team dropped both ends of a Sunday doubleheader against Puget Sound at Borleske Stadium, falling 8–6 in the Northwest Conference opener before a 12–5 loss in the non-conference nightcap.

Game 1 (UPS 8 Whitman 6)
The opener stayed scoreless into the fourth as Whitman starter Russell Petersen settled in early, striking out seven over six innings while allowing just one baserunner in each of the first three frames. Puget Sound finally broke through in the fourth, stringing together four straight hits to plate three runs and take a 3–0 lead.

Whitman answered immediately in the bottom half when Jonah Chang was hit by a pitch and Sam Mieszkowski-Lapping launched a two-run homer to left to cut the deficit to 3–2. The Loggers added two in the sixth and three more in the seventh, capitalizing on a sacrifice fly and a Whitman miscue to push the margin to 8–2.

The Blues mounted a late comeback when, in the eighth, Halen Otte lined an RBI single to center and Landon Runyan added a sacrifice fly to make it 8–4. In the ninth, a walk and a single set the table for Tristan Buehring, who punched a two-run single up the middle to bring Whitman within 8–6 before Puget Sound closed the door. Reliever Tanner Coddington worked the seventh, and Aidan Okano followed with two scoreless innings and two strikeouts to keep Whitman within striking.

Game 2 (UPS 12 Whitman 5)
In the seven-inning nightcap, Puget Sound jumped out quickly with two runs in the first and four more in the second, using a walk, hit-by-pitch and a three-run homer to build a 6–0 advantage and chase Whitman starter Luke Ivanoff early. After a brief relief stint from Carl Moland-Kovash, the Loggers tacked on four in the fourth to make it 10–1.

Whitman chipped away in the middle innings. A second-inning rally started when Luke Malzewski walked and later scored on a wild pitch, and in the fifth, he singled and Nathan Wilson followed with a drive to left before Otte crushed a three-run homer to left to cut the deficit to 10–4. The Blues added another run on patient at-bats and a bases-loaded wild pitch, but could not generate a final big inning.

The Whitman bullpen turned in some solid work behind the rough start. Owen Godinez and Carson Davis combined to navigate the middle frames against a hot Puget Sound lineup. Kengo Shirokane recorded key outs in the sixth, and Cole Kreber and Liam McLaughlin each posted scoreless appearances late, with McLaughlin retiring the side in the seventh to close the day on a high note for the staff.

The Blues now head out for their first NWC road series which opens on Saturday at Lewis & Clark.
