Men's Tennis Drops Road Trip Opener At Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. – Amidst sweltering Southern California heat, the Whitman College men's tennis team opened its spring break slate with a hard-fought 5-2 setback at Chapman University on Tuesday morning at Anderson Tennis Center.

The Blues came out blazing in doubles, sweeping all three courts to grab early momentum and a 1-0 lead. At the top spot, Alexander Stage and Niklas Jensen secured a 7-5 victory over Chapman's James Krantz and Ian Jordan, while Charles Rush and Artem Manov delivered a 6-4 win at No. 2 against Aram Izmirian and Ben Jorgenson. Guillermo Rodriguez and Hanri Luo capped the doubles sweep with a dominant 6-1 result on court three, taking down Lachlan Dickinson and Matt Dewey.

Chapman answered in singles, however, using its depth to turn the match around. Jensen was a bright spot for Whitman at No. 2, cruising past Krantz 6-3, 6-3 to lock up the Blues' lone singles point. On the top court, Stage ran into Izmirian, who claimed a 6-1, 6-1 decision to get the Panthers on the board.

The middle of the lineup proved decisive. Manov fell to Dewey 7-6, 6-1, and Rodriguez battled Jordan in a pair of tight sets at No. 4, but the Panther held firm in the key moments for a 7-5, 7-5 win. At No. 5, Rush fell 6-1, 6-4 to Seif El Salawy as Chapman closed in on clinching.

The day's final contest came on court six, where Luo found early rhythm in a 7-6 first set before Chapman's Adrian D'Aoust responded. D'Aoust regrouped to take the second and third sets 6-0, 6-4, sealing the overall 5-2 result for the hosts.

Whitman next plays Babson College in a neutral site match played in Claremont. Start time is set for 12:30 p.m.
