Women's Tennis Closes Trip With Thrilling Win

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Whitman College women's tennis team wrapped up its East Coast swing with an exciting 4-3 victory over Haverford on Friday, closing the road trip on a high note.​

"Such an exciting way to finish spring break," said coach John Hein. "We played well every day and to get the win at the end of a long trip took incredible grit. Gloria (Lau) was fantastic all week and then everything coming down to Bailey's (Bell) 3rd set was so exciting. I'm really happy for every one of the players who have worked so hard.

Whitman swept doubles to grab the early lead, with Renata Rosell and Nana Vang teaming up at the top of the lineup to secure the first point. Gloria Lau and Sascha Wells added another strong performance on the middle court, and the duo of Bailey Bell and Julia Longpre completed the sweep with a composed finish at No. 3.​

Haverford responded in singles, making the match a back-and-forth battle. The Fords pulled ahead with wins over Rosell at No. 2 and Longpre at No. 4, turning Whitman's early advantage into a 3-2 deficit. Lau kept the Blues in it with a clutch victory, leveling the overall score at 3-3 and shifting all attention to the final court on.​

With the match on the line, Bell became the hero for Whitman. Playing on the No. 4 court, she steadied herself in the deciding moments, earning a late break and closing out her match to secure the clinching point. Bell's win sealed the 4-3 decision and sent the Blues home from their road trip with a momentum-building result.

The Blues now return to the Pacific Northwest and the home stretch of Northwest Conference play. First up will be a road march against Pacific on Sunday, March 29 at 11:00 a.m.
