Baseball Swept At Lewis & Clark With 12-10 Loss

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Whitman College baseball team was swept at Lewis & Clark on Sunday after a 12-10 loss in the Northwest Conference series finale at Jerry Gatto Field.

Landon Runyan homered for the second time in the series, finishing with three hits and three RBIs as Whitman built an early lead before Lewis & Clark rallied late.

The Blues scored four runs in the first inning and added three more in the third to move ahead to a comfortable 7-0 lead. Runyan's three-run homer in the first highlighted the opening burst, and Whitman kept pressure on the Pioneers with RBI hits from Sam Mieszkowski-Lapping, Nate Petz and Wyatt Miyamoto. Whitman led 8-5 after six innings before Lewis & Clark surged back.

Lewis & Clark scored two runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and two more in the sixth to trim the deficit to 8-7. The Pioneers then broke the game open with a four-run eighth inning, capped by Jacob Shannon-Wilkerson's grand slam.

Whitman made one last push in the ninth. Mieszkowski-Lapping hit a solo home run, and the Blues drew within one on a balk, but they could not complete the comeback.

Whitman finished with 17 hits. Mieszkowski-Lapping went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Petz also had three hits, while Tristan Buehring added two hits and two runs scored. Jonah Chang and Christopher Nobrega each had two hits as Whitman spread the offense throughout the lineup.

Russell Petersen started for Whitman and allowed six earned runs on seven hits over five innings. Garen Geoghegan took the loss after giving up four runs in the eighth inning. Felix Gibeault struck out six over five innings for Lewis & Clark, and Bret Potter earned the save.

Whitman committed three errors and left 12 runners on base.

The Blues now take a break from conference play and will head to California next weekend for games against Whittier, Occidental and La Verne.
