Baseball Drops Road Trip Opener To Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. — The Whitman College baseball team opened its Southern California road trip with an 11-4 loss to Whittier College on Thursday afternoon at Mendez Stadium.

Whittier did most of its damage with 10 runs across the second and third innings to build a double-digit lead. Whitman (5-14) scored twice in the fifth and added two more runs in the eighth but could not close the gap.

The middle of the Whitman order supplied the offense. Catcher Nate Petz went 2-5 with a triple and a run scored, and left fielder Wyatt Miyamoto finished 1-4 with a two-run home run, two runs scored and a hit-by-pitch. First baseman Halen Otte was 2-5 with a run scored, and shortstop Nick Teng went 2-4 with an RBI. Second baseman Jonah Chang added a 2-3 day with a double and a walk.

Whitman broke through in the fifth when Petz reached on an infield single and Miyamoto followed with a two-run homer to left. In the eighth, Otte singled and scored on Teng's RBI single to left, and Christopher Nobrega added an RBI on a fielder's choice.

Dolan Wynne (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits with four walks in two innings. Tanner Coddington recorded two outs in the third, giving up five runs on three hits. Isaiah Granado followed with three and one-third innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts, and Luke Ivanoff closed with two scoreless innings, giving up one hit and striking out one.

Whittier starter Andrew Berdelis (2-2) earned the win, scattering nine hits over seven and one-third innings while allowing three earned runs and striking out six.
