Baseball Edged In Oxy Series Opener

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Whitman College baseball team opened its three-game California swing at Occidental with a tight 3-2 setback on Friday afternoon at Anderson Field. The loss came despite a four-hit day from Nate Petz and a strong effort on the mound from the Blues' pitching staff.

Petz supplied all of Whitman's offense, staking the Blues to an early lead with a solo homer to left-center in the top of the first, then adding an RBI single in the third to make it 2-0. The junior finished 4-4 with a home run and two RBI, accounting for four of Whitman's six hits on the day.

On the mound, Oliver Brown turned in five solid innings, allowing three runs on five hits with two strikeouts, while Hawthorne Moody followed with three scoreless frames to keep Whitman within a run. The Blues' staff limited the Tigers to seven hits and did not issue a walk over the final three innings.

Occidental's offense came to life in the fifth, when Logan Rooney's leadoff homer to left-center cut the deficit in half. The Tigers then strung together a double, a single and another RBI double to tie the game and took the lead for good on a sacrifice fly that made it 3-2.

Whitman (5-15) threatened late, putting two runners on in the eighth after a Landon Runyan single and another Petz base hit, but a flyout and groundout ended the inning. Occidental (17-6) closer Griffen Rogers then struck out two in a clean ninth to lock down the save.

Runyan reached base twice with a hit and a walk, and Christopher Nobrega added a single for Whitman.

Whitman and Occidental continue the series with a Saturday doubleheader in Los Angeles. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
