Ninth-Inning Rally Highlights Baseball's Tie At La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. — The Whitman College baseball team erupted for five runs in the top of the ninth inning to erase a five-run deficit and earn a 9-9 tie at the University of La Verne on Sunday, closing out its Southern California road trip with a dramatic comeback at Ben Hines Field.

Both teams agreed to the abbreviated game due to Whitman's travel time commitments to return to Walla Walla.

Trailing 9-4 and down to its final three outs, Whitman (6-16-1) loaded the bases on a single by Nate Petz and a pair of walks before beginning its rally. Sam Mieszkowski-Lapping and Luke Malzewski drew back-to-back bases-loaded walks to pull the Blues within 9-6 and keep the inning alive.

With two outs and the tying runs aboard, Nathan Wilson worked a two-strike count and then drilled a bases-clearing triple to left-center, scoring Malzewski, Mieszkowski-Lapping and Nick Teng to knot the score at 9-9.

Wilson finished 1-2 with three runs batted in, all coming on the ninth-inning swing. He would have scored the go ahead run in the final inning if not for a diving catch by Christian Takahashi in right field off a Jonah Chang swing to end the top of the ninth

Whitman spread its offense throughout the lineup, collecting 13 hits. Halen Otte went 3-5 with an RBI and a run scored, while Petz added two hits and two RBI and Teng went 2-3 with a double, two walks and an RBI. Christopher Nobrega chipped in three hits and scored twice from the top of the order.

La Verne (12-11-1) built its early lead with a four-run first inning and a two-run homer from Zachary Janczyk in the fourth, eventually taking a 9-4 advantage into the final frame. Whitman's bullpen, however, held the Leopards scoreless over the final three innings, giving the offense a chance to mount its late surge.

Luke Ivanoff worked the bottom of the ninth for Whitman, allowing just one hit and stranding the potential winning run at second to preserve the tie. The Blues moved to 6-16-1 on the season with the result.
