Blues Hang On For Series Sweep of Willamette

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Whitman College baseball team erupted for seven runs in the first two innings and then held off a late Willamette rally to secure its first series sweep of the season, an 11-10 Northwest Conference victory Sunday afternoon at Borleske Stadium.

Luke Malzewski and Halen Otte powered a 14-hit attack for the Blues, who improved to 10-19-1 overall and 5-10 in NWC play. Malzewski went 3-for-5 with three runs scored out of the leadoff spot, while Otte finished 3-for-5 with three runs driven in, including a three-run homer that provided crucial insurance in the sixth. Christopher Nobrega added three RBIs and Jonah Chang homered as Whitman completed the three-game sweep of the Bearcats.

Whitman seized control early with a five-run first inning, all coming with two outs. After a double from Nick Teng, Sam Mieszkowski-Lapping reached on an error that brought in two runs, and Nobrega followed with a three-run triple to right field to make it 5-0. The Blues kept the pressure on in the second when Teng's RBI fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly from Mieszkowski-Lapping pushed the margin to 7-0.

Willamette (7-20, 4-11 NWC) began to chip away in the middle innings, scoring twice in the third and three more in the fifth to cut the deficit to 7-5. The Bearcats drew a series of walks and took advantage of an outfield error in the fifth, with Finn Hoover's RBI single and a run-scoring groundout by Phillip Swinford III tightening the game. A groundout by Carter Stoltz in the sixth brought Willamette within one at 7-6.

Otte answered in the bottom of the sixth, turning on a pitch and sending a three-run homer over the left-field fence to restore a four-run cushion at 10-6. Chang added what proved to be a pivotal insurance run in the seventh with a solo shot to left, making it 11-7. Willamette's Olen Nofziger countered with a solo home run in the top of the seventh, and the Bearcats scored once in the eighth and twice in the ninth to again creep within a run.

In the ninth, Willamette loaded the pressure with two walks and back-to-back RBI plays that trimmed Whitman's lead to 11-10 and put the tying run on base. Reliever Ryder Peterson steadied things, however, inducing a game-ending strikeout to close the door. Isaiah Granado earned the win in relief with a scoreless eighth, finishing behind starter Dylan Colvin and middle relievers Tanner Coddington and Cole Kreber.

Nobrega went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Chang scored twice and drove in two as Whitman's top six hitters combined for 11 of the team's 14 hits. Hoover paced Willamette with a 3-for-4 day and two RBIs, and Matthew Rienhardt finished 4-for-6 with two runs and an RBI in the loss.

The Blues are back on the road next week hoping to extend their four-game win streak in a three-game set at Linfield.
