Baseball Splits a Twinbill With PLU

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College baseball team used a pair of late-inning rallies to grab game one before Pacific Lutheran answered with an early offensive outburst in game two, as the teams split a Northwest Conference series-opening doubleheader Saturday at Borleske Stadium.

Game 1: Whitman 10, Pacific Lutheran 8
Whitman erased a four-run deficit over the final three innings and scored nine of the game's last 11 runs to take the opener 10-8. The Blues trailed 6-2 in the seventh before a six-run frame swung the momentum, capped by a three-run home run from Halen Otte that tied the game and set the stage for a decisive eighth.

Nathan Wilson powered the offense with four RBIs, including a solo home run in the fifth and a sacrifice fly that pushed Whitman in front for good in the eighth. Luke Malzewski added two hits and two RBIs, including a go-ahead single in the eighth, while Nick Teng delivered a two-run single and finished with two hits.

Reliever Jack Finn earned the win with four and two-thirds innings of work, limiting PLU to three runs while keeping the Blues within striking distance. Isaiah Granado recorded the final two outs to notch the save after Pacific Lutheran scratched across two runs in the ninth.

Game 2: Pacific Lutheran 9, Whitman 6
Pacific Lutheran flipped the script in the nightcap, scoring nine runs over the first three innings and then holding off a Whitman comeback to claim a 9-6 victory. The Lutes built a 9-0 cushion behind a three-run homer from Carson Burke in the first and a six-run third that featured a two-run double from Rochne Beecham and RBI knocks from multiple hitters.

Whitman answered with three runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run single from Nate Petz and an RBI triple from Malzewski to trim the deficit. Malzewski continued his big day with a solo home run in the fifth and finished with four RBIs in the second game.

The Blues' bullpen steadied things after the early surge, as Ryder Peterson threw six scoreless innings of relief allowing only two hits and two walks to give the offense a chance to climb back. Whitman pushed the tying run to the plate in the late innings but settled for single runs in the fifth and eighth as PLU's Alex Lopez closed out the win.

The two teams close out the series tomorrow with another doubleheader. Prior to the start of the 12:00 p.m. twinbill, Whitman will honor its senior class with a special pregame ceremony on the field.
