Baseball Sweeps Twinbill From PLU On Senior Day

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College baseball team capped Senior Day with a sweep, rallying late in the opener and riding a big middle-inning surge in the nightcap to take a Northwest Conference doubleheader from Pacific Lutheran, 12-6 and 7-6, Sunday at Borleske Stadium.

The Blues honored 10 seniors before first pitch, then used an eight-run seventh inning to erase a three-run deficit in game one before holding off the Lutes in the ninth. In game two, Whitman answered Pacific Lutheran's five early runs with seven straight of its own, highlighted by a three-run homer from Halen Otte, and the bullpen stranded the tying run in the seventh to secure the sweep.

Game 1: Whitman 12 PLU 6
Pacific Lutheran led 6-3 after a three-run sixth inning, but Whitman exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the seventh to take control in a 12-6 win. Nathan Wilson delivered the decisive swing, a go-ahead three-run homer to left as part of a four-RBI day, and finished 4-for-4 with four runs scored out of the Whitman lineup.

Shortstop Nick Teng went 2-for-4 with three RBI, including a run-scoring double in the first and a sacrifice fly that started the seventh-inning scoring. Second baseman Jonah Chang tied the game in the fourth with a two-run homer, and Braydon Olson added three hits and two RBI, including a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Right-hander Hawthorne Moody fired two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win and improve to 4-1, while Cole Kreber closed the ninth to finish off a Whitman staff that limited the Lutes to three runs over the final four frames. PLU's Carson Burke went 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBI, and catcher Kaleb McNeely added two hits and three RBI in the loss.

Game 2: Whitman 7 PLU 6
In the nightcap, Whitman again fell behind early, as Pacific Lutheran scored two in the first and three in the second for a 5-0 lead. The Blues chipped away with a run in the second, a two-run homer from Noah Braunel in the third, and then broke through with a four-run fourth to pull ahead 7-5.

Nathan Wilson's RBI single brought Whitman within one before Otte launched a three-run homer to left, scoring Wilson and Christian Rivera to give the Blues a 7-5 edge. Braunel finished 1-for-3 with three RBI and a homer, while Rivera scored twice and Jordan Montemayor reached base three times with a hit, a walk and two runs scored from the middle of the order.

Carl Moland-Kovash earned the win with a scoreless fifth inning, and Luke Ivanoff recorded the final three outs for his second save after Pacific Lutheran pushed across an unearned run in the seventh and put the tying run on base. Rutger Youch homered and drove in two for the Lutes and also scored in the seventh, but Ivanoff notched a strikeout and a groundout to strand the potential tying run and seal the Senior Day sweep.

The Blues close out the season next weekend on the road with a three-game set at Whitworth.
