Baseball Drops Both Ends of a Doubleheader At Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitman dropped both ends of a road doubleheader at Whitworth on Saturday, falling 7-5 in the opener and 12-5 in the nightcap at Merkel Field

Whitman jumped out quickly with two runs in the top of the first, then answered again in the second, but a pair of early Whitworth scoring bursts proved to be the difference in a 7-5 loss. 
The Blues led 2-0 after Luke Malzewski drew a leadoff walk, came around on a pair of wild pitches, and Nick Teng followed with a single ahead of an RBI knock from catcher Nate Petz. Landon Runyan pushed the advantage to 3-2 an inning later, turning on a pitch for a solo homer to right in the second.

Whitworth used a three-run first and two-run second to reclaim control, then added back-to-back solo homers from Austin Paul and Kyle Memarian in the fourth to stretch the margin to 7-3. Runyan kept Whitman close with his second long ball of the day, a two-run shot to right in the sixth that cut the deficit to 7-5. 

Runyan finished 3-for-2 with two homers, three RBI and three runs scored out of the left field spot, while Petz drove in a pair and Malzewski reached three times and scored twice at the top of the order. Starter Russell Petersen took the loss after working the first three innings, with Jack Finn covering the final five frames and allowing just two runs in relief.

In the nightcap, Whitworth used a nine-run surge across the first two innings to seize control on the way to a 12-5 win. After a solo homer from Memarian in the first put the Pirates on the board, the hosts broke the game open with eight runs in the second, highlighted by a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch from Xavier Hattenburg, a two-run single from Paul and consecutive home runs from Memarian and Caleb Gray.

Whitman continued to chip away despite the early hole, starting with a two-run second inning when Nate Petz and Jonah Chang singled. Nathan Wilson then brought home a run with a sacrifice, and Christopher Nobrega followed with an RBI double to right. The Blues added a run in the fifth on Nick Teng's sacrifice fly and another in the seventh on a Jordan Montemayor sac fly before catcher Halen Otte launched a solo homer to left in the eighth. Otte finished 2-for-5 with a homer, two RBI and a run scored, while Wilson scored twice and Nobrega doubled, scored and drove in a run out of the leadoff spot in center.

Six different Whitman pitchers saw action, with Ryder Peterson delivering three and two-thirds innings of middle relief and Dolan Wynne tossing a scoreless eighth.

The Blues close out the series and the season with a single game on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
