Baseball Closes Season With Loss To Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitman College closed its 2026 season with a 10-2 setback at Whitworth on Sunday afternoon at Merkel Field.

Whitman (14-25-1, 8-16 NWC) finished with 12 hits but stranded 11 runners, while the Pirates used a pair of early home runs and an eight-run surge across the middle innings to take control. Second baseman Luke Malzewski went 3-for-5 with two extra-base hits and drove in both Whitman runs.

Whitworth (26-14, 20-4 NWC) broke a scoreless tie in the second inning when Dominic Giusti reached on an error, then scored on a sacrifice fly from Nate Gray Jr. The Pirates stretched the lead to 5-0 an inning later as Carson Coffield hit a two-run homer to left and Giusti followed with a two-run shot to right, with all four runs unearned.

Whitman answered in the fourth when Braydon Olson doubled to right and scored on Malzewski's RBI single up the middle to make it 5-1. Olson finished 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, while Christian Rivera and Noah Braunel added one hit apiece to pace the top of the order.

Whitworth responded with three runs in the fifth, highlighted by Coffield's two-run single and an RBI single from Gray Jr. that pushed the margin to 8-1. Malzewski delivered again in the sixth, ripping an RBI double down the left-field line to plate Olson, but the Pirates added a sacrifice fly from Caleb Gray in the bottom half and Coffield's RBI double in the eighth to close the scoring.
Coffield went 3-for-4 with a home run, double and five RBI to lead Whitworth, while Giusti homered and drove in two and Gray Jr. added two RBI. Starter Nathaniel Kurano (6-3) scattered seven hits over five innings, allowing one run with four strikeouts to earn the win.

Dylan Colvin took the loss for Whitman, allowing one unearned run over two innings before giving way to the bullpen. Garen Geoghegan closed the game with two solid innings, giving up one run on three hits with four strikeouts.
