Women's Tennis Falls To Top-Rankled CMS In NCAA Second Round

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whitman College women's tennis team saw its standout season end Friday with a hard-fought 4–0 loss to top-ranked and host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

The 34th-ranked Blues left little doubt it belonged on the national stage Friday afternoon, pushing No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps before suffering the loss. The loss closed Whitman's season at 19-6 after a run that carried the Blues into May against the top team in Division III.

CMS, now 24-1, built an early edge in doubles, but not before Whitman showed it was prepared to trade punches with the nation's best. At No. 1 doubles, Nana Vang and Renata Rosell dropped a 6-1 decision, and at No. 2, Sascha Wells and Gloria Lau also fell 6-1 as the Athenas secured the doubles point.

The Athenas pushed the team score to 2-0 when Rosell fell 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, the first singles match to finish. Shortly after, Wells wrapped up her match but on the losing end at No. 3, a 6-1, 6-0 result that moved CMS within one point of advancing.

The clinching point came at No. 4 singles, where Julia Longpre fell 6-2, 6-0 to close the team score Though the final line favored CMS, Whitman exited having pushed the top-ranked Athenas on nearly every court, a performance that reflected the grit and quality that defined its 19-win season.
