WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- The Whitman women's soccer team got a goal from four different players on their way to a 4-0 shutout of George Fox this afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields in a Northwest Conference contest.
Â
The victory puts the Missionaries at 4-5 in conference and 8-5 overall. The loss drops the Bruins to 1-6-1 in the NWC and to 3-8-1 on the year.
Â
In addition to a well-balanced offensive attack, Whitman employed stifling defense that allowed George Fox only 6 shots, 2 on-goal, for the entire match. Conversely, the Missionaries triggered 26 shots -- 14 on target.
Â
Whitman's first goal came on a breakaway;
Kelsey Roehner scored her second goal of the season , dribbling down the left side and firing a shot into the upper right-hand corner. The score came at the 29:18 mark.
Â
The Missionaries would close-out the half with a 2-0 lead, courtesy of a one-timer from Mackenzie Hughes (team-leading eighth goal of the season).
Pamela London provided the assist on the score that came in the 39th minute.
Â
In the second half, play continued primarily in the George Fox end of the field. Whitman took a 3-0 lead on
Danielle Audino's first goal of the season when
Elyse Laurin drove a low centering pass to the far side of the goal where Audino was waiting to tap it in.
Â
The final goal came with just eight ticks left on the clock.
Hallie Swan collected her first goal of the year on a one-timer that was perfectly placed into the lower left corner of the net. Swan knocked in a deflection after the ball had caromed several times in the box.
Â
The win snaps a two-game losing streak for the Whits and a scoring drought over the same span (the Missionaries dropped two 1-0 matches last weekend on the road).
Â
Whitman will try to get back over the .500 mark in conference next weekend when they host Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound Saturday and Sunday. Both matches start at 12-noon.
