Offensive Outburst, Whits Defeat Linfield

11/2/2013 7:43:00 PM

Box Score WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Daniel Kim scored two goals and Whitman reached the overall .500 mark for the first time this season, as the Missionaries downed Linfield 4-1 in Northwest Conference men's soccer action this afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields.

The Missionaries improve to 8-8-2 on the season and 7-4-1 in conference, good for third-place. Linfield falls to 8-7-1 overall and 5-6-1 in the NWC.

The win marks Whitman's third straight victory and fourth in its last five matches.

"With Cooper Schumacher already missing and then losing Jack Morgan in the first half, it was good to see the depth of our squad come thru today, "said Whitman head coach Mike Washington. "Kudos to Chris Perkins for playing at the back. I thought we had just a great all-around team performance today."

Whitman took a 1-0 lead late in the first half on a header by Alex Barsher -- his team-leading 10th goal of the season. Isaac Sappington assisted on the goal, sending a cross in front of the net that Barsher placed over the goalkeepers outstretched arms.

Minutes into the second half, the Wildcats tied the game at 1-1 on a goal by Domenico Del Prete, but the Missionaries answered back. Six minutes later Jesse Mirman scored his first goal of the season from inside the box to regain the lead for Whitman. Kim got the assist.

Kim, then, did some goal scoring of his own. The first goal came on a rocket from outside the box that hit the top right corner of the net. The second, Kim's third goal of the season, saw him beat two defenders and then angle right before putting ball past the goalkeeper. "Those were two great goals by Daniel, "said Washington.

The Missionaries' offense was consistent, as the Whits fired-off twelve shots in the first half and thirteen in the second for a total of 25. Eleven shots were on-goal. Meanwhile, Linfield managed eleven shots -- seven on target.

Niko Contos played the entire match in goal for Whitman, making 6 saves in notching the victory.

Next Up: Whitman hosts Willamette tomorrow at 1:30 pm . . . it is the final home match of the regular season and the seniors will be honored during a pregame ceremony.
