WILSONVILLE,OR  -  Catcher MacLean Harned socked four hits and third baseman Paul Heywood had three Saturday afternoon as Whitman built a 7-1 lead after three innings and held on for a 10-8 victory over Corban in game two of a season-opening collegiate baseball doubleheader at Wilsonville High School.

"It's always nice to get the back end of a doubleheader," Whitman coach Sean Kinney said.

The Missionaries dropped a 4-1 decision in the opener despite a gallant effort by starting pitcher Will Thompson, who lasted six innings, struck out two, and allowed three runs on six hits.

Left-handed reliever Sterling Spilinek threw the final two innings of game one and allowed an unearned run on two hits.

"Our pitchers did a good job and kept us in it," Kinney said. "I was happy with them attacking the zone. It was nice to see Sterling throw the ball well.

"But we couldn't get too much going (offensively)," Kinney said.

Harned collected his hits in as many official at-bats. Among them were a pair of doubles including an RBI two-bagger that commenced a two-run Missionary rally in the third inning. He also scored one of Whitman's 10 runs in the contest.

Heywood had a two-out, two-run double in the seventh inning as part of his three-hit performance. The Missionaries had 12 hits in the nightcap and benefited from nine walks and three hit batsmen.

Spencer Hobson got the start on the mound and allowed three runs and seven hits over four innings.

Robert Maislin earned the win in game two with shutout relief in innings six and seven. Aaron Cohen threw the final two frames and fanned four.

Whitman travels to Anthem, Ariz., next weekend for the three-day Arizona Desert Classic. The Missionaries Classic opener will come Friday against Whittier.
