Doubles sweep leads to NWC win

SPOKANE, Wash. — Whitman College opened defense of its Northwest Conference women's tennis championship Saturday morning with a 7-2 victory over host Whitworth University.

The 29th-ranked Missionaries, who improved to 1-1 overall, got singles victories from Courtney Lawless (No. 1), Erin Bell (4), Allie Wallin (5), and Alex Sigouin (6). Bell's straight-set win clinched the team victory while Sigouin's triumph lasted three sets.

Whitman registered a sweep in doubles. Courtney and Morgan Lawless (8-5), Erin Bell and Katrina Allick (9-7), and Maddy Webster and Hanna Greenberg (8-5) all prevailed in the pro-set encounters.

Coach John Hein also praised the efforts of Jenna Dobrin (No. 2 singles) and Morgan Lawless (No. 3), though both came up just short in their singles matches.

"Whitworth is a tough place to play," Hein said. "They play hard. We had to earn every point we got.

"Doubles was important," Hein said. "Courtney and Morgan haven't had much match or practice play. The two and three singles matches were long three setters and really competitive. Hanna played a solid match at three doubles. It was nice to see our new players play really well."

Whitman travels to Cheney, Washington, Sunday for a 10 a.m. matchup with Eastern Washington University.
