CHENEY, Wash. – A weekend of travel between two matches didn't make things any easier on Whitman College's women's tennis team Sunday when the nation's 29th-ranked squad in Division III traveled to Eastern Washington University to square off against the Division I Eagles. The visiting Missionaries picked up a road victory Saturday but were unable to duplicate that feat Sunday as EWU took a 7-0 decision on its home courts.
Whitman's record drops to 1-2 with the loss while Eastern improves to 2-6.
Playing the D-I points system -- where doubles counts as one point in a best of three matches format -- the No. 2 doubles pairing of
Hanna Greenberg and
Madison Webster had played into a match tie-breaker against EWU's Dani Young and Erin Blessing when the match was stopped, per D-I guidelines, after the Eagles captured both 1-doubles and 3-doubles before the No. 2's were finished.
Tough matches during Saturday's early-season win took their toll on the legs and by the time singles action rolled around Sunday the energy was understandably running low.
Greenberg took the Eagles' Carolina Lopez into a tie-breaker in the first set before dropping a 7-6(4) decision at 6-singles. Lopez then rolled to a 6-1 second-set win to take the point from Greenberg.
Lindsey Brodeck at No. 4 and Webster at 5 both took a total of five games from their D-I opponents but also came up short in straight-set losses.
The M's return home for their next two matches, a pair of Northwest Conference tilts Saturday against George Fox University and Sunday against Pacific (Ore.) University.
