Blues Dominate UMHB In NCAA Tournament Opener

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Whitman College women's tennis team made a commanding opening statement at the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament on Thursday, blanking Mary Hardin-Baylor 4-0 in a match played to clinch at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, California. The 34th-ranked Blues improved to 19-5 with the victory, while the 49th-ranked Crusaders ended their season at 12-6.

Whitman, who advanced in the tourney for the second time in three seasons, set the tone in doubles. At No. 1, Renata Rosell and Nana Vang overwhelmed Jolin Ha and Bailee Lane, cruising to a 6-0 win to give the Blues the early edge. Mary Hardin-Baylor answered at No. 2, where Emma Nordin and Breanna Taylor earned a 6-3 decision over Sascha Wells and Gloria Lau to briefly level the session.

The doubles point came down to No. 3, and Whitman's duo of Jules Thompson and Bailey Bell delivered, securing a 6-4 victory against Lori Bryan and Avery Williams to send the Blues into singles with a 1-0 lead.

Whitman quickly turned that momentum into an insurmountable advantage in singles. Gloria Lau was first off court at No. 6, delivering a flawless performance in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Williams to double the team lead to 2-0. Bell followed at No. 5, backing up her doubles clincher with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Taylor to push Whitman within one point of the match. Rosell then closed the door at No. 2 with a 6-1, 6-3 result over Nordin to secure the 4-0 team decision in the match played to clinch.

With the win, the Blues advance to the second round and will play host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Friday, May 8 at 12:00 p.m.
