WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Whitman College's women's tennis team entertained Northwest Conference foe George Fox University Saturday morning, but the Missionaries were harsh hosts as they silenced the Bruins by a score of 9-0 in a mix between indoor and outdoor courts.
Doubles action was played in the Bratton Indoor Tennis Center where the three doubles pairings of Whitman (2-2, 2-0 NWC) completed a sweep of Fox (3-2, 0-1) to take a 3-0 score to the outdoor courts for the singles matches under the noontime sun.
Sisters Courtney and
Morgan Lawless made quick work of the Bruins' Sarah Tuemmler and Chantell Hadeed at 1-doubles, rolling to an 8-2 triumph for the Missionaries' first point of the day., Not long after the teaming of
Madison Webster and
Hanna Greenberg completed an 8-4 win at No. 2, setting up the 3-doubles pairing of
Lindsey Brodeck and
Seana Minuth with the chance to complete the doubles sweep at No. 3. Brodeck and Minuth complied, defeating Ali Diehl and Krista Rey, 8-6.
It didn't take long after warmups on the Whitman Tennis Courts for another point to be added as
Jenna Gilbert steam rolled Rey at 6-singles in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-0. The match-clinching point came courtesy of Greenberg's 6-2, 6-2 win over Fox's Andrea Motley at No. 5.
Even though victory was already in hand the Whits played on, continuing to dominate. Brodeck took 4-singles (6-2, 6-4) followed by
Courtney Lawless snaring No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-1).
Allie Wallin picked up another point for Whitman with a 6-0, 6-3 win at 5-singles, leaving
Jenna Dobrin at NO. 2 to try to finish off the shutout.
Dobrin breezed to an opening-set, 6-1, victory over Hadeed but the Bruin battled back to steal the second set, 6-4. In the pro-set tie-break set to decide the match Dobrin fell behind on the first point but quickly eliminated the deficit with two points on Hadeed's serve. Dobrin's advantage grew as the tie-break set wore on until she finished off Hadeed, 10-5, for the match win.
Whitman snaps right back into action Sunday morning with a home match against Pacific (Ore.) University. The match is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. on the outdoor courts but weather conditions will dictate if the match needs to mimic Saturday's indoor/outdoor combination.
