WALLA WALLA, Wash. – With career-win No. 99 tucked into her belt after Friday night's doubles action, all that stood in between win No. 100 for Whitman College's
Morgan Lawless was a match-up at 1-singles. The century-mark victory came quickly for Morgan in straight sets as she and her Missionaries teammates downed visiting University of Puget Sound, 8-1, in a Northwest Conference match under the lights at the Whitman Tennis Courts.
The Friday-evening victory kept 29th-ranked Whitman undefeated in conference action, 5-0, and improved their overall record to 7-2. Puget Sound falls to 1-5 overall and within the league.
Morgan teamed with
Allie Wallin at No. 1 doubles to start off Friday's match and the duo quickly rang up the win with an 8-2 triumph over Puget Sound's Elizabeth Chao and Tresa Bild. The 2-doubles tandem of
Lindsey Brodeck and
Seana Minuth won almost as quickly, 8-4, and coupled with a Puget Sound default at No. 3 the Missionaries were able to move into singles with a 3-0 lead.
The first singles point came almost as quickly as the doubles points. At 5-singles Whitman's
Katrina Allick and the Loggers' Claire Fitzgerald squared off on a lower court while doubles commenced on the upper courts. Allick pounded out a resounding 6-0, 6-0 win over Fitzgerald to push the score to 4-0.
The clinching point came at No. 4 singles where
Madison Webster raced to a 6-1, 6-1 win. Morgan's singles point came next, followed by
Alexandra Sigouin picking up a point at No. 3 with another straight set win.
Brodeck, playing in her first collegiate match at 2-singles, fought off a pair of match points before succumbing to Puget Sound's Farrell Ahlf who captured the 7-5, 7-5 victory for the Loggers' lone point on the night.
The Missionaries have little rest before their next match as they welcome Pacific Lutheran University to the same courts Saturday afternoon in a 1 p.m. conference match.
