IRVINE, Calif. – The Whitman College doubles pairing of
Hanna Greenberg and
Madison Webster, and singles players
Erin Bell and
Lindsey Brodeck all won for the second day in a row, but the 29th-ranked Missionaries suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of No. 30 Vassar College in a non-conference, top-30 women's tennis battle.
The loss moves Whitman's record to 9-4 while Vassar improves to 4-3 on the year.
Greenberg and Webster handled the Brewers' Kate Christensen and Morgan Fitzgerald at No. 3 doubles, taking a point for Whitman by a score of 8-5. The victory elevated the Greenberg/Webster pairing to a season record of 7-1.
Needing to rally from behind after Vassar earned wins at 1- and 2-doubles, the Missionaries picked up victories in singles at Nos. 5 and 6 from Bell and Brodeck, respectively. Bell took care of Winnie Yeates, 6-4 and 7-5, and Brodeck downed Fitzgerald, 6-3 and 7-5.
Three of the other singles matches that went Vassar's way could have flipped in Whitman's favor.
At 1-singles
Courtney Lawless recovered from a 6-0 opening-set loss to Christensen, pushing the Brewers' top player into a tiebreaker in the second set. Christensen, however, took the tie-break 7-3 to capture a 7-6 second-set and match victory.
At Nos. 2 and 4 the Missionaries suffered even greater heartbreak.
Jenna Dobrin dropped her first set, 6-3, to Vassar's Ava Sadeghi but answered with a 6-4 win in the second to tie the 2-singles match at one set apiece. Sadeghi came out the victor in the third to steal another point for the Brewers.
At No. 4
Allie Wallin fell behind with a 6-4 loss in her opening set to Vassar's Emily Hallewell but responded with a 6-4 over Hallewell in the second. As with Dobrin, unfortunately, Wallin wasn't able to complete the comeback, falling to Hallewell in the third set.
Friday brings the sixth match in the eight days for Whitman as they travel to Redlands, California, to take on 22nd-ranked University of Redlands in the Missionaries' final bout in California.
