REDLANDS, Calif. - The tandem of
Hanna Greenberg and
Madison Webster won their fourth doubles match in a row, as did teammate
Alexandra Sigouin in singles, but Whitman College's 29th-ranked women's tennis team wasn't able to overcome home-standing and 22nd-ranked University of Redlands in a 7-2 non-conference loss Friday afternoon on the Bulldogs' Verdieck Courts.
The defeat drop Whitman's overall record to 9-5; Redlands improves to 7-5 on the season.
Greenberg and Webster, now 8-1 on the year, downed the Bulldogs' teaming of Gabriela Vasquez and Maddie Morton by an 8-2 count at No. 3 doubles to earn Whitman's first point of the day. Redlands, however, would nab points at 1- and 2-doubles to head into singles action with a 2-1 advantage over the visiting Missionaries playing their sixth match in eight days -- four against teams ranked within the Intercollegiate Tennis Associations national rankings.
Whitman's only other points of the afternoon came at 6-singles from Sigouin who bettered her overall record to 7-2. Sigouin squared off against Morton, winning in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-2.
Friday's match concludes Whitman's spring break trip into California. The Missionaries return to action on April 4 for a Northwest Conference match at Linfield College, followed by a league contest the next day at Lewis & Clark College.
