SALEM, Ore, - Whitman College's women's tennis racked up a pair of Northwest Conference wins Saturday, closing out the day with an 8-1 late-afternoon victory at Willamette University after starting the day with a 6-3 win in Forest Grove, Oregon, at Pacific (Ore.) University in the morning.
The day's results keep the Missionaries (13-5, 10-0 NWC) atop the league standings as Pacific drops to 5-9 overall and 2-8 in the league, and Willamette slips to 2-12 and 1-8, respectively.
The afternoon match at Willamette saw Whitman break out to a 3-0 lead after capturing each of the doubles matches, two by scores of 8-2 and the third by an even more dominent 8-1.
Lindsey Brodeck and
Jenna Gilbert teamed up for the first point at the No. 3 slot,
Katrina Allick and
Alexandra Sigouin won at No. 2 and the last of the doubles points came from
Allie Wallin and
Hanna Greenberg at No. 1.
A straight-set win from Brodeck at 3-singles inched Whitman a point closer to clinching, which came soon after when Sigouin downed the Bearcats' Mikaila Smith in straight sets at No. 2.
The morning match at Pacific started with a Whitman point from Gilbert and Sigouin at 3-doubles but the host Boxers stole wins at Nos. 1 and 2 to carry a 2-1 lead into singles action.
Sigouin notched another point with a 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, pulling Whitman even at 2-2 in team points, and Wallin pushed the Missionaries ahead with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at 2-singles.,
Pacific broke back with a win at No. 1 to pull even but Greenberg at No. 4 then Allick at No. 5 clinched the win for Whitman with straight-set wins.
Seana Minuth added one more point for the Missionaries with a win at No. 6.
The Missionaries close out their regular-season schedule Saturday and Sunday with two more conference matches. Whitman heads to Pacific Lutheran University on Saturday then finishes the schedule Sunday at University of Puget Sound.
