Singles takes 3 in loss vs. Redlands

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Whitman College notched wins in three of six singles matches Saturday morning against 18th-ranked University of Redlands in the Bratton Indoor Tennis Center, but the visiting Bulldogs were able to use a sweep of doubles action to down the No. 22 Missionaries, 6-3, in the kick off to Day 2 of the three day WC Winter Classic hosted by Whitman.

Lindsey Brodeck, Mary Hill and Allie Wallin recorded the singles victories for Whitman (1-3) in its top-25 match-up against Redlands (2-0).

Each of the three doubles matches won by the Bulldogs hinged on late service breaks that resulted in an 8-6 Missionaries loss at No. 2 and 8-5 defeats at Nos. 1 and 3.

Hill was the first to grab a point for Whitman in singles action. The first-year took her opening set against Lauren Villanueva, 6-2, at 3-singles before the Redlands player would even the count with a 6-4 win of her own. The third set leaned Hill's way from the outset as she stormed to a 6-1 win to earn the first team point for the Whitties.

Wallin made much quicker work of Redlands' Gabriela Vasquez at No. 5, sweeping a 6-1, 6-3 straight-set victory.

Brodeck had the biggest hill to climb for her victory, dropping the opener 6-3 to Claire Bohoskey.

"(Bohoskey) was hitting a flat, strong forehand and I had to make some adjustments to that," said Brodeck about her plan heading into the second set. "I was able to get some deeper, top-spin forehands that forced her to make some changes, and from their I was able to establish more of my own game plan."

The adjustments worked as Brodeck went on to a 6-1 victory in the second set then rolled to a 10-4 win in the third set super-tiebreaker in the morning's final match.

The Winter Classic continues Saturday at Bratton with matches between No. 33 Trinity (Texas) University and No. 35 Linfield College in the early afternoon, and between Redlands and 29th-ranked Lewis & Clark College in the early evening. The Classic concludes Sunday with a morning match between Trinity and Redlands followed by a 2 p.m. Northwest Conference match pitting the host Missionaries against Linfield.
