WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The final match of the three-day WC Winter Classic pitted host Whitman College against No. 35 Linfield College Sunday afternoon at the Bratton Indoor Tennis Center in the Missionaries' opening Northwest Conference match-up. A sweep of doubles action and four singles victories lifted the 22nd-ranked Whitties past the Wildcats by a score of 7-2.
Whitman (2-4, 1-0 NWC) picked up its second win of the season with Sunday's result as Linfield (4-3, 1-1) was dealt its first conference defeat after opening league play the day before with a win.
The tandem of
Allie Wallin and
Jenna Gilbert recorded the first point of the day for Whitman, downing Linfield's Basia Kopecka and Courtney Mostul, 8-5, in the 3-doubles slot. Adding to the irony of the first point was that Wallin also recorded the opening singles point for Whitman and Gilbert recorded the final point of the match.
Those tidbits aside, the quick doubles start from the Whitties helped buoy what was assuredly tired legs after playing matches Friday and Saturday against nationally-ranked opponents, only to see another ranked opponent on the docket Sunday afternoon.
After Wallin and Gilbert teamed up for a win, the pairing of
Jenna Dobrin and
Cello Lockwood gained another point at No. 2 doubles, followed soon after by
Hanna Greenberg and
Mary Hill at 1-doubles, completing the doubles matches with a 3-0 sweep by Whitman.
Wallin rolled through a 6-1, 6-0 win at 4-singles over Marisa Kume to make the score 4-0 but Linfield was finally able to break the shutout with a win at No. 2.
Hill, at 3-singles, registered the clinching point of the match for the Missionaries as the first-year took down Linfield's Maris Doveri, 7-5 and 6-2, in straight sets.
Lindsey Brodeck added the sixth point for Whitman with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 win over Sierra Lemon in the 5-singles match, and Gilbert put the final touch in the win with a straight-set victory at No. 6 singles.
The Missionaries will stray from their home courts in their next match, heading West to Portland, Oregon, where they will square off in a league match against ITA Fall 2015 West Region champion Lewis & Clark College Friday at 4 p.m. The road trip continues Saturday with a 9 a.m. NWC bout at the Courthouse Club in Salem, Ore., against host Willamette University and a 3 p.m. conference match at the Club against George Fox University.
