SALEM, Ore. – It was a good day to play two for Whitman College's 22nd-ranked women's tennis team, and it was an even better day to win two Northwest Conference matches as the Missionaries silenced host Willamette University, 9-0, Saturday morning at The Courthouse Club then downed George Fox University, 6-3, in an afternoon match.
The day's pair of victories lifted Whitman's overall record to 4-5 and its conference mark to 3-1. Willamette and George Fox both finish the day with identical 0-1 overall and 0-1 marks in the league.
Saturday's opener against Willamette was a steam-rolling by Whitman as it surrendered just four games to the Bearcats in doubles play, and then only lost a total of eight games in six singles matches. In four of those singles matches --
Allie Wallin at No. 2,
Jenna Gilbert at No. 4,
Hanna Greenberg at No. 5 and
Lori Sheng at No. 6 -- the scores were 6-0, 6-0 thumpings.
Mary Hill, playing her first collegiate match at the 1-singles slot, breezed through a 6-2, 6-2 win and fellow first-year
Jana Klages-Miller won handily (6-3, 6-1) at No. 3 for the clean slate.
The afternoon match against Fox found more resistance from the opponent, yet Whitman was still able to race out to a 3-0 lead from doubles play.
Wallin and
Lindsey Brodeck overwhelmed Fox's Kristen Mock and Sarah Tuemmier at 1-doubles, 8-1 to get the Whitties off to a good start in the long day.
Hill and Klages-Miller teamed up for an 8-5 win at No. 2, with Gilbert and Sheng closing out 3-doubles, 8-3, for the second time Saturday.
Brodeck's win at 2-singles made the score 4-0 and Sheng's victory at No. 6 provided the clinching point.
Gilbert and Sheng were quite the pair on the day as their doubles pairing at No. 3 gave up a total of three games over two wins, and both recorded singles wins later on in each match. Klages-Miller also had a solid day with a pair of doubles wins and a singles victory against Fox.
Whitman has a free weekend before hitting the road for a Saturday, March 5 conference match in Spokane, Washington, against host Whitworth University.
