SALEM, Ore. – For the second time in the past four matches Whitman College's women's tennis team faced off against host Willamette University, and Saturday morning the results were the same as the last time with the 25th-ranked Missionaries taking a 9-0 Northwest Conference win over the Bearcats at their home courts of the Courthouse Club.
Whitman (6-5, 5-1 NWC) dropped only one game in sweeping doubles action, and allowed Willamette (0-6, 0-6) to steal just 13 games during the six singles matches during the Missionaries' dominant outing.
Cello Lockwood posted an unblemished day for Whitman, teaming with
Jenna Dobrin at 2-doubles in an 8-0 win, then rolling to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles over Willamette's Alexis Gjurasic.
Also picking up a perfect outing was Lori Sheng who defeated the Bearcats' Katie Adams at No. 4 without surrendering a game.Jenna Gilbert and
Jana Klages-Miller were almost as perfect for the Whitties. First the pair won No. 3 doubles by an 8-0 score, then Gilbert triumphed at 3-singles by scores of 6-0, 6-2 while Klages-Miller took her 6-singles match by counts of 6-3, 6-0.
Whitman continues on the road Sunday with a visit to Linfield College for a 10 a.m. conference match in McMinnville, Oregon.
