CLAREMONT, Calif. – The six-match win streak Whitman College's women's tennis team carted onto the Biszantz Family Tennis Center courts of host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Thursday morning slipped away as the fifth-ranked Athenas took a 9-0 win from the 25th-ranked Missionaries.
Whitman's overall record drops to 8-6 while C-M-S improves to 9-1.
"This was a good match from (C-M-S)," said Missionaries head coach
John Hein. "But it was also good experience for our players to play against at top-five team. This will help us in the long run, at the conference tournament and hopefully in the national tournament."
The No. 1 slots in doubles and singles for Whitman were among those that were closest to earning a point from their Athenas counterparts.
Mary Hill and
Hanna Greenberg teamed up at 1-doubles and finished with an 8-4 defeat at the hands of
C-M-S's Katie Kuosman and Caroline Ward.
At 1-singles the Missionaries' Jenna Dobrin was twice a service break short in her 6-4, 6-4 loss to Ward.
Whitman continues action during its spring break trip Friday at the Tennis Center, taking on Vassar (N.Y.) College in a battle of West and East Coast teams.
