TACOMA, Wash. –
Jana Klages-Miller's dominating straight-set victory at No. 6 singles notched the clinching point Sunday afternoon at Pacific Lutheran University in what would become an 8-1 Northwest Conference women's tennis victory for 25th-ranked Whitman College. Earlier in the match Klages-Miller had teamed up with
Jenna Gilbert at 2-doubles to secure the Whitties' initial point of the match at the Sprinker Recreation Center.
Whitman (13-9, 10-2 NWC) -- after Saturday's shutout victory at University of Puget Sound -- had already locked in the second seed for the upcoming NWC postseason tournament in Portland, Oregon, on Saturday and Sunday, April 23-24. Sunday's loss ends PLU's season with records of 5-10 overall and 4-8 within the league.
Klages-Miller and Gilbert's 8-4 victory in doubles preceded an 8-2 Whitman win at No. 3 from the pairing of
Lori Sheng and
Allie Wallin who were playing together for the first time this year. The Lutes avoided a doubles sweep by taking the No. 1 match, but that would be the highlight of the day for the hosts as all singles matches went Whitman's way in straight sets.
Gilbert, at No. 4, recorded the first point in singles for Whitman followed by
Mary Hill's 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 for what would be the fourth Whitties point on the day.
It didn't take long after Hill's romp for Klages-Miller to follow suit by an identical score for the clinching point.
All that remained was the cheering from the sidelines in the final matches as one-by-one Sheng at No. 5,
Jenna Dobrin at No. 1 then Wallin at No. 3 closed out two-set wins to put a close on a nearly perfect day.
Whitman enters the postseason tournament at top-seeded Lewis & Clark College as the reigning NWC champion after defeating L&C last spring in the championship match for the Whitties' fourth consecutive NWC tournament title.
