PORTLAND, Ore. – Tone-setters
Hanna Greenberg and
Mary Hill got 25th-ranked Whitman College rolling Saturday afternoon in the second semifinal of the Northwest Conference 2016 Women's Tennis Tournament, streaking to an 8-3 win at No 1 doubles for the first point of the afternoon for the Whitties in what would become a 5-0 pasting of No. 35 Linfield College to push the Whitties into the tournament's championship match Sunday morning against top-seed and host Lewis & Clark College.
Greenberg and Hill, 7-3 in their last 10 matches together, set the table for their teammates, who followed suit to record the shutout victory over the Wildcats who finish their season with a 12-6 record.
Whitman (12-6) added its second point from another 8-3 victory, this one coming at 3-doubles from
Lindsey Brodeck and
Allie Wallin, then completed a sweep of the doubles when
Jenna Dobrin and
Cello Lockwood gutted out an 8-6 win at No. 2.
"Cello and Jenna's win at 2 was huge," said head coach
John Hein. "It got us to 3-0 and sent us into singles with a lot of team momentum."
Just two points shy of clinching the win, Whitman's singles players raced to see who would provide the winning point. Hill was fastest, picking up a 6-1, 6-2 win at 2-singles over Linfield's Marisa Doveri. That left the deciding point to someone else, and has so often happened in her career junior
Allie Wallin provided the finishing touch, pounding out a 6-1, 6-1 rout of Marisa Kuma at No. 4 to vault Whitman into the championship match.
Wallin is no stranger to the stress of a clinching point as her racket has directed the final point in Whitman's NWC tournament championship matches in 2014 and 2015.
Next up for Whitman is a Pios team ranked 18th in the country. Lewis & Clark swept the season series against the Whitties, but a mid-season 7-2 loss to the Pios later became a narrow 5-4 defeat in which L&C had to rally from behind to steal two of the last three points for its victory.
