WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Whitman College's 25th-ranked women's tennis team capped off Senior/Alumnae/Family Weekend on Sunday with an 8-1 Northwest Conference win over visiting George Fox University, sweeping each of the three doubles matches and taking five of six in singles play at the Whitman Tennis Courts.
Jenna Gilbert,
Jana Klages-Miller and
Cello Lockwood each played a part in two points apiece for Whitman (10-8, 7-2 NWC), which earns a season sweep of the Bruins (9-8, 4-4) with Sunday's win.
Klages-Miller and Gilbert teamed up at No. 3 doubles for an 8-3 win following
Hanna Greenberg and
Mary Hill's 8-5 win at 1-doubles. Lockwood and senior
Jenna Dobrin completed the sweep with their 8-3 win at No. 2.
Lockwood won the race off the courts in singles action, earning a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Fox's Ellen Pearson at No. 3. Klages-Miller was next to join the win column with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6, just minutes before Gilbert closed out her 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5.
Stepping into the No. 4 slot for Whitman was
Lori Sheng and the first-year didn't disappoint, rolling to a 6-2, 6-0 win over the Bruins' Taylor Barnes.
Whitman's final win of the day came at 2-singles where
Allie Wallin rolled to a 6-2 opening-set win over Catrina Kwong but had to battle back from a deficit in the second set. Trailing Kwong 5-4 Wallin earned a service break then held serve to inch ahead 6-5, however Kwong held her serve to force a tie break. The players traded several points until Wallin scored consecutive points to move in front 6-4. Kwong won the next point but Wallin finally closed the deal on the ensuing point to pick up the set and match win, 7-6 (7-5).
Sunday's event, under bright skies with alumnae and team families in attendance, recognized Whitman's two graduating seniors, Dobrin and
Katrina Allick. The duo have played on three consecutive NWC championship teams and been participants in three straight NCAA Division III tournaments.
The Missionaries will play Pacific (Ore.) University on Sunday at the Whitman courts before closing out the regular season on the road the following weekend.
