REDLANDS, Calif. Set up by singles wins from
Lori Sheng and
Hanna Greenberg, Whitman's
Andrea Gu was able to add the clincher with
Mary Hill spreading the icing on the cake in the 28th-ranked Blues' 6-3 non-conference women's tennis victory Friday afternoon over host and No. 25 University of Redlands.
Whitman (10-5) defined the word 'rally' in the match, coming back from a quick 1-0 deficit in doubles, and later picking up the wins from Gu and Hill after both trailed in their singles matches.
After the Bulldogs (4-9) rolled to an 8-0 win at the No. 1 doubles slot, Gu and teammate
Allie Wallin were able to square the match with an 8-6 win at No. 2.
The tandem of
Jenna Gilbert and Sheng dropped their opening game at 3-doubles, but bounced back to take an early 3-2 lead that would lead to an 8-6 victory, lifting Whitman into the lead heading into singles action.
Redlands evened the match with a win at No. 6, but Sheng pounded out a 6-1, 6-2 win at 5-singles to push the Blues back in front, and Greenberg scored a straight-set 4 and 3 win at No. 4 to provide the Blues with a two-point advantage.
The decision at No. 3 tilted the way of the Bulldogs, leaving Gu and Hill on the courts to decide the in-region match.
Gu won her first set over Sarah Ikioka, 7-5, at 1-singles, while Hill was trailing Emily Murnin throughout most of her opening set.
Rally!
Hill fought back to force a tiebreaker, eventually winning the set 7-6 with a 7-4 tiebreak victory.
Unfortunately, Gu had moved on to her second set where she lost her momentum, falling 6-2 to even her match.
That momentum remained on Ikioka's side in the deciding third set as she raced out to a 4-0 lead over Gu. And then…
Rally!
The Whitman first-year stormed back against Ikioka, scratching and clawing back to a 5-5 tie before taking the next two game to finish off her comeback for the Blues' clinching point.
That left Hill and Murnin out on the courts, now battling for pride.
Hill led, barely, most of the way. But Murnin fought off a match point at 6-5 to send their bout into a tiebreak.
Even with the match in hand Hill persevered, eventually winning the tiebreaker, 7-5, and the match, 7-6 (4) and 7-6 (5), and adding the icing on the cake with the sixth point.
Head coach
John Hein was proud of how his team battled all afternoon, but thought the final doubles point was a big one.
"(Gilbert and Sheng) really set the tone," for the rest of the match. "They played smart tennis, as did the rest of the team when we entered singles, battling windy conditions for a good upset victory on the road."
Whitman continues a brief swing into Southern California with a Saturday match against the nation's second-ranked team, host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in a 10 a.m. match.
