WALLA WALLA, Wash. A quick beginning to Saturday's Northwest Conference women's tennis match led host Whitman to a 7-2 victory over visiting George Fox University at the Bratton Indoor Tennis Center.
The Blues (6-1, 6-0 NWC) raced out to a 3-0 advantage behind a sweep of the doubles, beginning with
Hanna Greenberg's and
Mary Hill's 8-0 triumph over Ellen Pearson and Sarah Tuemmler of Fox (2-3, 2-2) at No. 1 doubles.
Allie Wallin and
Jenna Gilbert earned a point at 3-doubles with an 8-4 win, and
Lori Sheng and
Andrea Gu finished the doubles sweep with a victory by the same score at No. 2.
Gu came right off the doubles courts to earn the first singles point for the Blues, powering her way to a 6-2, 6-2, win at 2-singles over Catrina Kwong and inching Whitman one win away from the clinching point.
That win came in the next completed match when Greenberg downed Andrea Motley, 4 and 3, at No. 4.
Wallin won her match at No. 3 in straight sets as did Sheng at No. 5 to finish the scoring for Whitman.
"I am really proud of how we came out in doubles," noted head coach
John Hein. "And then we stayed tough in the singles."(Wallin) and (Greenberg) pulling out those matches was huge for us," he added.
Whitman continues its NWC weekend Sunday morning, taking on visiting Pacific (Ore.) University in a 10 a.m. match at Bratton.
