WALLA WALLA, Wash. Whitman's 27th-ranked women's tennis team remained unbeaten in the Northwest Conference after rolling through visiting Pacific (Ore.) University, 8-1, Sunday at the Bratton Indoor Tennis Center.
The Blues (7-1, 7-0 NWC) three weeks ago downed the Boxers (2-4, 1-4) on their home courts in Forest Grove, Oregon.
Sunday's victory followed Whitman's script of late -- a sweep of the doubles followed by two early wins in singles action to clinch a team victory.
The doubles wins went in order this day. At No. 1
Hanna Greenberg and
Mary Hill strolled through an 8-1 win, then
Lori Sheng and
Andrea Gu took the 2-doubles spot 8-4, and finally
Allie Wallin and
Jenna Gilbert came through for the sweep at No. 3, 8-6.
Greenberg earned the first singles win, 6-0 and 6-0, at No. 4, and Wallin clinched the match with her 1 and 3 win in the 3-singles slot.
Mary Hill at No. 2 (2 and 0), Sheng at No. 5 (3 and 0) also won in straight sets for Whitman.
Gilbert went overtime for her win at 6-singles, winning the third-set super-tiebreaker, 10-8, to finish off a win over Johanna Wilson.
The Blues continue at home in their next matches, welcoming No. 22 Linfield College to Walla Walla for a 10 a.m. Saturday match, and then No. 23 Lewis & Clark College to the courts Sunday at 10 a.m.
