Women clinch 2nd with PLU rout

WALLA WALLA, Wash.  The opening 30 minutes of the match set the tone Sunday for Whitman's 28th-ranked women's tennis team, as the Blues dropped just two games in doubles play on their way to an 8-1 Northwest Conference rout over visiting Pacific Lutheran University on Senior Day outside at the Whitman Tennis Courts.

The Blues (13-6, 11-1 NWC) with Sunday's win earn their seventh point in the mathematical formula utilized by the league to determine the regular season champion, clinching at worst a second-place finish.

The win over the Lutes (2-14, 1-11) was the regular-season finale for Whitman, while Linfield College has matches remaining that could earn it as many as eight points in the formula. Should the Wildcats slip up and finish with seven points they would still claim the No. 1 seed for the NWC postseason tournament having defeated Whitman in their earlier meeting in the spring.

Most likely playing her final match on the Whitman courts -- where not once, but twice she registered the championship-clinching point for the Blues in NWC tournament play -- senior Allie Wallin made the most of her Senior Day.

Teamed with Mary Hill at 2-doubles the pairing picked up Whitman's first point of the afternoon, rolling to an 8-1 win during a trio of doubles matches that saw the home team stroll through another 8-1 win along with an 8-0 shutout victory.

Though she wasn't the clinching fifth point in singles play, Wallin did add the sixth point with her commanding 6-3, 6-1 win over PLU's Emily Beemsterboar at No. 4.

As a first-year in the program Wallin notched the winning point against Linfield College in the 2014 NWC tournament, lifting the Blues to a 5-0 win in the championship match.

A year later on the exact same court she battled through an incredible third-set tie-breaker against an opponent from Lewis & Clark College with the championship on the line, earning the win (6-3, 3-6, 7-6(7-2) ) for the final point to send Whitman to the 5-4 victory.

Her efforts Sunday weren't wasted as the rest of the Blues followed suit to race through their matches.

Hill at 2-singles, Hanna Greenberg at No. 4, Lori Sheng at 5, and Jenna Gilbert at No. 6 all won in straight sets. Gilbert's was the most lopsided as she downed Kristi Floyd without losing a game.

The postseason NWC tournament is slated for Saturday and Sunday, April 22-23, at the site of the regular-season champion. The winner of the tournament earns the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III women's tournament.
