WALLA WALLA, Wash. Sunday at the Whitman Tennis Courts was another proud day for Whitman's women's tennis team as it again registered strong performances at the ITA/Oracle 2017 Division III Northwest Regional, led by
Hanna Greenberg's and
Andrea Gu's march into Monday afternoon's championship match in the main doubles draw.
Saturday's results saw five of seven singles players roll out of their opening matches into the second round, and four of those five playing their way into Sunday's round of 16.
In the doubles draw Saturday, all three pairings easily dispatched opening- and second-round foes to qualify for Sunday's quarterfinals.
The morning singles matches on Sunday had Greenberg, Gu,
Lori Sheng and
Anastasiya Redkina playing, but only Greenberg and Redkina advanced into the quarterfinals.
Greenberg took a straight-set victory, 6-4 and 7-5, from Lewis & Clark's Natalie Kelly, while Redkina, took down Puget Sound's Lisa Owen, also in straight sets, 2 and 4.
Awaiting in the quarters were the singles draw's top two seeds, Ella Riddle of Linfield and Josie LeGarza of Lewis & Clark. Riddle moved on to the semifinals by defeating Greenberg in straight sets, as did LeGarza in downing Redkina -- a Whitman first-year -- in two.
Sheng had been pushed out of the draw by Riddle earlier in the round of 16, where Gu also was defeated.
The conclusion of the singles matches Sunday brought about the quarterfinal doubles matches.
Greenberg and Gu won out first, beating a pair from Linfield, but Sheng and
Jenna Gilbert as well as Redkina and
Kattie Pak fell out of the draw in those quarters.
On short rest Greenberg and Gu jumped on Court 6 to square off against L&C's LeGarza and Kacey Incerpi.
The Whitman duo leaped out to a 3-0 lead before LeGarza and Incerpi battled back to trail by only one, at 4-3.
Eventually Greenberg and Gu -- both All-Northwest Conference honorees last spring -- pulled out to a 7-5 lead, one win away from moving on to the finals.
The Pioneers pairing had other thoughts, though, taking the next game to inch back within one again.
This time, with Greenberg serving, the Blues twosome were able to finish off the match, with an extra fist-pump from each after the winning point.
Monday's singles semifinals will be played at 9 a.m. with the championship match scheduled one hour after those semis conclude.
The doubles championship is scheduled to hit the courts after the singles final, at a time depending upon the participants of the singles championship, but likely in the early afternoon.
Winners of the regional singles and doubles draws earn ITA/Oracle All-American status, and automatically qualify for the Small College 2017 Oracle Cup in Rome, Georgia, on October 11-15.
