Women's Tennis Drops Winter Classic Opener To CalTech

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College women's tennis team played its first home match in over three weeks but it would unfortunately come in a loss as the Blues dropped their Whitman Winter Classic opener to CalTech, 7-2, on Saturday at the Bratton Indoor Tennis Center.

The Blues got behind the eight ball a bit after CalTech won two of three doubles matches to take a one-point lead into singles. The Whitman pair of Anastasiya Redkina and Audrey Grigore fell 8-1 at second doubles, but Mary Hill and Audrey Gu posted the equalizer with an 8-3 win over the CalTech team of Kana Moriyama and Sarina Liu.

Whitman was nearly the one that grabbed the lead but fell in a tight match on the No. 3 court. Lori Sheng and Kattie Pak took CalTech's Michelle Hyun and Jennifer Yu into a tiebreaker but ultimately lost 8-7 (7-2).

The Blues had hoped to get back into the match and nearly did. The first three results went to the Beavers, two going to a third set. Hyun had to rally from a set down to beat Redkina 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 to get CalTech's third point. After Hill lost at the two to put CalTech on the brink of the win, Gu pushed her No. 1 court match to Moriyama to a third set but ultimately fell 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 for the match clincher.

The final match of the day saw an exciting contest on the No. 6 court. Pak rallied from a set down for a solid 1-6, 6-2, 10-9 win over Ankita Roychoudhury.

The Classic concludes on Sunday with a trio of matches among Whitman, Linfield, CalTech and Gustavus Adolphus. The Blues will play the middle match, taking on Gustavus at 12:30 p.m.
