Blues Explode for 15 Game Two Runs, Earn NWC Split vs. Whitworth

TACOMA, Wash. - The Whitman College baseball team opened its Northwest Conference series with Whitworth, splitting a doubleheader on Saturday at Logger Field on the campus of the University of Puget Sound. The Blues (6-7) dropped the opener then exploded with 15 runs in game two to earn the split.

Game 1
The opener saw an impressive hitting performance from Brett Williams who batted 3-5 with one run and one RBI. Despite a four-run fifth-inning for the Blues, Whitworth put three runs on the board in the third with another three crossing the plate in the fifth putting Whitman in what was once a six-run hole.

Nicholas Nerud (2 H, 2 R, 1 RBI) and Taylor Poffenroth's RBI singles opened the scoring for the Bucs, helping them to a three-run lead through two and one-half innings. Poffenroth (2 H, 1 R, 3 RBI) helped Whitworth add to its lead two innings later. After Jaxsen Sweum opened the inning with a base hit, Poffenroth added to his team's lead with a two-run homer to put the Bucs up 6-0.

The Blues would rally and put four across the plate in the bottom of the fifth. Back-to-back doubles from David Johnson (2 H, 1 R) then Matthew Fox (2 H, 1 R) put runners on second and third with one out. After Williams and Jerick Nomura (1 H, 1 RBI) drove them home with RBI base hits, Kyle Reisman (1 H, 2 RBI) then delivered a two-run single and Whitman had cut the lead to 6-4.

That would be it for the Whitman scoring however as Whitworth tacked on one run in the sixth to complete the scoring.

Blues starter Travis Craven (1-1) battled into the fifth inning before being lifted for Charlie Carmichael. He was tagged with the loss, tossing four and two-thirds allowing six runs on nine hits with five strikeouts.

Matthew Young (2-2) tossed five complete innings to earn the win. He allowed the four fifth-inning runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Brett Thomas tossed four innings of scoreless relief for the save.

Game 2
Two huge innings was all the scoring Whitman needed to win in a rout to earn the doubleheader split.

Whitman batted the order and then some in their big second inning. Sox (3-4, 2 R, 2 RBI) opened the frame with a double then later scored after Williams (2 H, 2 R, 1 RBI) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Sox later capped the inning's scoring with an RBI hit to drive home Kevin Nakamura (2 H, 1 R). The Blues scored their nine runs on seven hits, the biggest a two-run single from Nomura (2 H, 2 R, 3 RBI) to drive home Jake Wishart and and Anthony Nevoso.

Two innings later Whitman was back at it. Sox crushed a homerun to left field on Whitman's first at bat and the Blues again batted the order. Reisman added the third and fourth runs with a two-run base hit and later scored to put Whitman up 15-1.

Eric Ma (2-0) won his second decision in a quality outing. Ma tossed six complete innings allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts.

Whitworth threw six pitchers at the Blues with Darren Crosby (0-2) tagged with the loss in one-third of an inning of relief work.

Liam Fitzpatrick led the Bucs with three hits and a run scored.
