Quality Performances Highlight Season Opener For Cross Country

CHENEY, Wash. - The Whitman College men's and women's cross country teams took to the trails for the first time this season, competing in a largely Division I field at the Clash of the Inland Northwest hosted Saturday by Eastern Washington University at the EWU Sports & Rec. Center.

"On the men's side it was a very good first race for us," said head coach Scott Shields. "We are a young team and saw great results from our returning runners overall. We did beat Whitworth, the only other DIII team here but it's early and they are going to be a strong team. Overall I'm super excited as to how the men's team is progressing and looking forward to watching them compete in the top half of the conference this year. Maamoon Saleh was our number one guy today and looked strong from start to finish.Tucker Grinnen totally stepped up today as well as Silas Miller which bodes well for the men.

"On the women's side it was also a huge positive step for us as a team. The women beat Whitworth and we ran short handed without Maya Virshup and Bryn Carlson. Whitney Rich had a really solid first race back after her off campus studies program last fall and placed 4th overall. Chloe Michaels took a step forward on the team and we are excited about that."
