Whitman Golf Win Titles, Makes History At PLU-GHC Invitational

TACOMA, Wash. - With contributions all around, both the Whitman College men's and women's golf teams rose above the field to win their respective competitions at the PLU-GHC Invitational held Monday and Tuesday, the first time both men's and women's teams won titles at the same tournament

Ellena Jeong and Beatrice Archer led the women's effort, finishing No. 1 and No. 2 on the individual leaderboard. Jeong fired a scorching 72 on day one and finished three over 147 for the tournament to win the title. Her even-par day one featured a round with 2 birdies and only two bogeys, including hitting 15 green in regulations. Going into round two with a 5 shot lead, she turned the front nine in 40, and bounced back with a 1-under par 35 on the back 9 to secure her first collegiate victory.

Archer shot six over 150 and carded 10 strokes better on Day 2 to finish second in the tournament (80-70--150). She finished with a birdie on the final hole in the midst of a torrential rain storm

Malaina Sidhu also improved on the second day, carding five strokes better to finish 13 over 187 good for a tie for fifth place. Day 2 featured back to back birdie recovery after an unfortunate triple bogey to post her collegiate best of 76. Samantha Torres and Cindy Lou competed Whitman's score with rounds of 84, 82 and 84, 83 respectively. 


As a team, Whitman shot 12 strokes better than second place Whitworth.

The men's side saw four golfers place in the top 10 led by Ben Sweet who fired an even par 144. Mason Remington placed in a tie for sixth (2 over 146) with Alexander Knox and Parker Krovisky both closing the tournament tied for eighth (3 over 147).

The Blues began round two with a 10 shot after completing round one of a 288, lead by Knox with a 1-under 71. Demonstrating impressive depth, Whitman's final round 294 included an even par 72 by Sweet, followed by Mason Remington (73), Dawson Fish (74), and Krovisky (75). Knox shot a non-counting 76. On day one, Alex Knox raced to an early lead with 7 birdies in the first 11 holes. On the second nine of both rounds he experienced strong wind and rain that which resulted in significantly higher scores. Sweet was strongly in contention until the final few holes. 


As a team, they finished six over, seven strokes better than second place PLU

Next up for the Blues is the Whitworth Invitational Oct. 8-9.
