WALLA WALLA, Wash. - First year Avery Cohen couldn't have picked a better time to score her first career goal. With only 51 seconds remaining, she scored off a service from Virginia Hunt to lift the Whitman College women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Willamette in Northwest Conference action on Saturday afternoon at James Hayner Field.
The win was a much needed one for the Blues (5-3-1, 2-2-1 NWC) who now even their NWC record. "That was a fantastic win," said head coach
Michelle Voiland. "The team showed so much grit and resilience and fought so hard for that win. I am incredibly happy for the players. They did not waver, trusted each other and gave everything to get those three points."
Both goals came in the second half after Willamette struck first with a goal midway through the first half. Natalie Rodriguez-De La Torre slipped a ball across the teeth of the goal mouth which Nina Krassner-Cybulski ran on to and finished past Lindsey Pasena-Littlesky in net for the Blues.
Both teams registered ample scoring opportunities but it were the Blues who found the equalizer in the game's 57th minute. Katherine Sand found Hunt who finished past Bearcat keeper Sam Borngasser to level the score.
Whitman's pressure was relentless and the game winner was sure to come - and come it did. Hunt delivered a short pass to Cohen inside the right side of the penalty box who scored past Borngasser with only seconds to play.
The Blues will look to keep it rolling when they host Lewis & Clark on Sunday at 2:45 p.m.
