LA VERNE, Calif. - The Whitman College baseball team had hoped to end its season-opening road trip on a high note, but came up short in a 12-0 loss at No. 23 La Verne University on Sunday afternoon.
The Blues threw six pitchers with starter Mateus Conaway (0-1) tagged with the loss in three innings of work. He allowed four earned runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts. Rylan Burigsay came on to start the fourth and was stellar in his three complete innings of work, allowing only one unearned run on two hits.
Though not finding their way across home plate, the top of the Whitman (1-3) order provided the offense for the Blues. Beck Maguire posted two hits in a leadoff role with Nate Korahais, Garrett Runyan and Brandon Ting each adding a hit.
The Leopards (4-0) staffed the game as well with Gerald Terry starting and picking up the win in three scoreless innings of work.Â
La Verne did its damage early and late, scoring in each of the first three innings then plating five in the eighth inning. Anthony Salcedo and Matthew Diaz led the way. Salcedo posted two hits, three runs and three RBI, and Diaz delivered three hits, one run and two RBI.
The Blues now get set for their opening weekend of Northwest Conference play, hosting George Fox for a three game set this Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's doubleheader gets underway at 12:00 p.m.
