Julien Hernandez delivered a sensational complete-game performance on the mound,
Brandon Ting blew the game open with a three-run homer in the fifth and the Whitman College baseball team topped Alfred State 6-1 on Friday night.
After giving up a home run on the game's first at bat, Hernandez (2-1) settled in and struck out a season-high 13 batters while scattering five hits and issuing only one base on balls. Ryan Bailey had a solid outing of his own, also pitching a complete game while posting nine strikeouts.
The top of the order did the damage for the Blues. Jack Bickerton tripled, homered and scored two runs and drove in a run. Beck Maguire added two hits, two runs and one RBI and Garrett Runyan batted 3-3 and scored a run.
Tyler Petery and Joseph Schatz both had two hits for the Pioneers. Petery added a run and an RBI resulting from his solo homer on the game's first at bat.Â
After Petery's homer, Hernandez struck out the side leading to the Blues plating two in the bottom of the first. Bickerton tripled to open the day for the Blues, then scored on Maguire's double to help Whitman to a 2-1 lead.
After Hernandez retired the side in order in the second, Bickerton went yard with a solo homer to put the Blues up 3-1. Hernandez was given some major insurance in the fifth inning when Ting blasted his three-run homer to extend the lead to five runs, and Whitman cruised to the win.
Whitman and Alfred State close the series on Saturday with a doubleheader. Game one start time is set for 12:00 p.m.
