Women's Tennis Takes Down Pacific

FOREST GROVE, Wash. - Sascha Wells and Illina Jha dominated as a doubles pair then did the same in singles play to lift the Whitman College women's tennis team to a 6-3 win at Pacific In Northwest Conference play on Saturday.

"Today was a huge step in our pursuit of the NWC. Pacific is a great team and they played incredibly at the top of the lineup," said coach John Hein. "We got huge wins at 2 and 3 dubs for the lead."

Cassidy Binder and Sydnie Binder demonstrated the talent that makes each one of the finest in the nation, teaming up to win in doubles and sweeping in singles to claim their team's three points.

Whitman (10-7, 3-0 NWC) lost on the No. 1 doubles court, but left with the lead after wins on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts. Wells and Jha dominated 8-0 before Jin Yu and Grace Carter topped Sofia Mazzola and V. Casab-Klescova 8-5 at the three.

Wells opened singles action with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win at the five, her second blanking of the day. Wins by the Binder sisters kept the result in question heading to the final two contests. With the Blues up by one, Erica Mock registered the match-clincher with her 6-3, 6-3 win at fourth singles over Mazzola.

"Our depth really stepped up," added Hein. "Ilina kept her great momentum going, Erica built off her great spring break, Sascha was clinical and Grace stepped up to show she is more than a fantastic doubles player. Overall it was a team win. I'm so happy, but we're right back to work tomorrow at Willamette."

Whitman closes out their weekend road trip with a visit to the aforementioned Bearcats on Sunday. Match time is set for 11:00 a.m.
