No. 40 Women's Tennis Cruises Past Lewis & Clark

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Blues swept in doubles and did the same in singles as the No. 40 Whitman College women's tennis team produced a dominant 9-0 win over Lewis & Clark on Saturday at the Whitman Tennis Courts.

"What a great match for us," said coach John Hein. "We tried some new doubles and Jin (Yu) and Grace (Carter) were terrific to get us a lead. I'm also so proud of how we handled the windy conditions since we've played indoors most of the season so far."

The aforementioned doubles pair of Yu and Carter breezed through their match, beating Charlotte Makoni and Arielle Bloom 8-1 to put Whitman (6-3, 2-0 NWC) up. The Whitman pairs of Teleya Blunt and Arianna Castellanos at the one, and Ilina Jha and Sascha Wells at the three also won convincingly.

The Blues quickly secured the victory with wins on the No. 3 and No. 6 courts. Castellanos blanked her Pioneer opponent 6-0, 6-0 at the three before Erica Mock clinched the match with her 6-0, 6-1 win at the six.

"In singles," added Hein, "Arianna is looking good and Erica got us the clinch. And the excitement of the day was Teleya demonstrating how tough she is mentally after being down a set and 1-4 in the second, coming back, then coming back from 4-8 in the match tie break was fantastic grit."

The Blues return to action on Sunday with a pair of home matches. Whitman faces Linfield at 11:00 a.m. before facing the College of Idaho in a non-conference contest set for 3:00 p.m.
